The 7th Symposium of the Research Group for «Music of the Turkic Speaking World» will be held at the KNC




The 7th symposium «Preservation, Integration and Renewal of Traditional Music: Theory and Practice» of the Research Group for «Music of the Turkic Speaking World» of the International Council for Traditional Music, UNESCO will be held at the State Conservatory on October 4-7, 2021. It will be an online event on the ZOOM platform organized jointly with the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the International Council for Traditional Music.

Brief Information about Organizers

ICTM is a research organization dedicated to the comprehensive study, documentation, preservation and dissemination of traditional music and dance in all countries of the world. The Council has existed since 1947 and is in formal relations with UNESCO, participating as an expert base for the development of norms and rules for the preservation of the intangible cultural heritage in the field of musical art and in the formation of representative lists of cultural heritage. World conferences (one of which was held in Astana in 2015) are held once every two years and bring together all the leading researchers of musical traditions from around the world (the 2019 conference gathered about 800 participants). Research Group symposia are key meetings aimed at solving specific theoretical and practical scientific issues.

The «Music of the Turkic Speaking World» Research Group has existed since 2006. It is dedicated to the practice, documentation, preservation and dissemination of traditional music and dances that are found in the vast territory of the Turkic-speaking world from southern Siberia to the Mediterranean Shores, includes the art and music of many different ethnic groups (Altai, Azerbaijanis, Balkars, Bashkirs, Chuvash, Crimean Karaites, Dolgan, Gagauz, Karachai, Karakalpak, Kazakh, Khakassia, Krymchaks, Kyrgyz, Nogai, Shor, Tatars, Turkmens, Turks, Tuva, Uighurs, Uzbeks and Yakuts as well as ancient and medieval states.

Kurmangazy KNC is actively involved in the work of ICTM. Representatives of the Conservatory have been permanent Council members since the 1990s. Major international symposia and conferences with the participation of ICTM representatives were held in Kurmangazy KNC in 2010, 2016 and 2018. Kurmangazy Conservatory has had a representation in the «Music of the Turkic Speaking World» since 2006.

About the 7th Symposium: «Music of the Turkic Speaking World»

Participants of the Symposium are researchers from Great Britain, USA, Belgium, Hungary, Turkey, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Working topics of the Symposium:

1. INSTRUMENTAL, SONG AND EPIC TRADITIONS OF TURKIC SPEAKING PEOPLE.

We would like to discuss the history, current state and prospects for the development of musical and musical-poetic traditions, their cultural significance, their connection with song and instrumental traditions. What is the modern traditional culture of the Turkic people and their neighbors? How is national identity manifested in song, epic and instrumental music? What are the problems of traditional culture in the 21st century?

2. HERITAGE UNDER THREAT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF TRADITIONS: CONSERVATION OR TRANSFORMATION?

The 2003 UNESCO Convention for the       Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage contains three lists: the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Register of Good Protection Practices and the Cultural Assets Urgent Protection List. In this regard, the symposium will study the issues of the AUTHENTICITY of folklore and traditional art and the MODERNIZATION of national traditions.

3. NEW DIRECTIONS IN STUDYING TRADITIONAL CULTURE OF TURKIC SPEAKING PEOPLE.

Our VII International Symposium will provide an opportunity for dialogue between scientists, musicians and folk artists involved in performing and teaching activities. Presentations and discussions (round tables) will alternate with concerts, master classes and video screenings.
