International Scientific and Practical Conference "Actual problems of modern musical Turkology" will be held in Almaty



The scientific conference dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Kazakh professor, doctor of Arts Saule Utegalieva, will be held at the KNC named after Kurmangazy from May 28-30, 2018.

International scientific-practical conference "Actual problems of modern musical Turkology" will bring together in Almaty more than 50 ethnomusicologists from eight countries of the world. The special guests of the conference will be Anna Nekrilova (a member of the Russian Folklore Department at the Pushkin Institute of Russian Literature, Russia), Il Woo Park (ethno-instrumentologist, South Korea), Iqbal Mamedzade (Laureate of the G.Mammadov Republican Tarists’ Competition, Azerbaijan); Kyzyrbek Zhanasyluly (Kuyshi, Researcher, China), Violetta Yunusova (Professor of the Foreign Music History Department of the Moscow State Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, Doctor of Arts, Moscow), Gennady Makarov (Associate Professor of the Tatar Music and Ethnomusicology Department of the Kazan State Conservatory named after N. Zhiganova, Russia), Igor Matsievsky (Head of the Instrument Studies Department of the Russian Institute of Art History, St. Petersburg), Slavomira Zheranska-Kominek (Professor of the History Faculty at the Musicology Institute, Poland) and others.

The scientific conference is organized in four sections:

- Musical instruments and instrumental music of the Turkic peoples of Eurasia;
- Phenomenon of sound and sound-pitchy organization in the Turkic peoples music;
- Musical-poetic and theatrical art of the Turkic peoples. Museums;
- Music of the Turkic peoples in the educational process.

The program of the conference includes not only presentations, but also a large concert of traditional music, a presentation of the film and the book "Turkestan Collection of Songs and Instrumental Pieces by R.Karutsa (1905)", master classes by Il Woo Park, Anna Nekrylova, Gennady Makarov, Kyzyrbek Zhanasyluly and Iqbal Mamedzade. A scientist from South Korea will share the new scientific research of J. Bailey (English scientist, professor, PhD) in studying the performance of string instruments, the musician from Azerbaijan will report on the results of a comparative analysis of the instruments "tar" and "saz", kyushi Kyzyrbek Zhanasyluly will introduce the dombra "kuis" of China, and Gennady Makarov will give a lecture on the late medieval musical and instrumental culture of the Tatars of the Volga and the Urals (XVIII-early XIX centuries).

Based on the materials of the conference, a compilation of scientific articles prepared on the theme "Actual problems of modern Turkology" was prepared. In total, the publication included more than 70 articles, each of which is included in one of the the four announced areas of the conference.

Utegalieva Saule Iskakovna (born in 1958, Astrakhan, Russia) - Professor of the Department of Musicology and Composition of the Kurmangazy KNC, Doctor of Art History, representative and expert from Kazakhstan in ICTM (International Council on Traditional Music at UNESCO) and ESEM (European seminar on ethnomusicology), author of several books, programs on ethno-solfeggio and more than 200 scientific articles published in Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Lithuania, Finland, Germany, Japan, South Korea.

Scientific works of Saule Utegalieva: "Mangistau Dombra tradition" (1997), "Сhordophones of Central Asia" (2006), "Turkmen kuis" in the dombra tradition of Western Kazakhstan" (twice published in 2008 and 2015 in co-authorship). In 2013, a monograph "The Sound World of Turkic Nations Music: Theory, History, Experience (based on the instrumental traditions of Central Asia)" (p. 528) was published in Moscow. Saule Utegalieva is a scientific editor, author of several books and collections. Among them: I. Matsievsky "Folk Instrumental Music as a Phenomenon of Culture" (2007), monograph of B.Igilik "Far away. Kazakh Kuis of Xinjiang" (2011), Asian Traditional Music: Problems and Materials (1996), Music of the Turkic World and Music of the Peoples of Central Asia (2009); "Traditional music of the Turkic-Mongolian peoples: the problems of exploration. Phenomenon of sound" (2014), "From voice to instrument: the phenomenon of sound in the traditional cultural heritage of the Turkic world "(2016) and others.

S. Utegalieva's article "A computer-based study of scales on the Kazakh dombra and kyl-kobyz" was published in the yearbook of Traditional Music, a special ethical book established in 1949 by the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM).
