International Conference

to the 150th anniversary of Alexander Zatayevich

The outstanding researcher Alexander Viktorovich Zatayevich (1869-1936) made a huge contribution to the study of the musical traditions of Kazakhstan. A chance meeting with a Kazakh song in 1920 turned his life and the entire history of Kazakh music upside down. Being an outstanding personality and a gifted musician, he revealed to himself and to the world the inexhaustible riches of Kazakh traditional music, retaining not only the melodies, but also information about the bearers of the tradition - the brightest musicians of his time. Songs of other nations also provoked keen interest among the researcher, resulting in famous Kyrgyz and Tatar collections, recordings of samples of Uygur, Karakalpak, Dungan, Uzbek, Mongolian, Tuvan, Buryat, Yakut, Korean folklore. Along with other researchers of traditional music of the peoples of the USSR (including V. Uspenskiy and V. Vinogradov, who’s 140 and 120 anniversaries are also celebrated this year), A. Zatayevich laid a solid foundation for Soviet musical ethnography. A. Zatayevich’s enthusiasm for Kazakh music gave a powerful impetus to the study and preservation of intangible cultural heritage for many decades. The 150th anniversary of Alexander Viktorovich serves as a pretext for the discussion of the actual problems of contemporary ethnomusicology:

·       the legacy of A. Zatayevich and Soviet musical ethnography in contemporary culture;

·       current approaches to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage;

·       the role of the researcher in the study and preservation of oral traditions;

·       modern methods of musical and ethnographic research;

·       school and tradition in contemporary art.

These questions set the direction of reflection but do not limit it. Sessions and concerts will be held within the framework of the conference. Conference languages: Kazakh, English and Russian. You may participate personally or with poster presentation.
